A supportive team which is well regarded across the city: BHISS is a multi-disciplinary team that works with children & young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families, through schools and other education settings


Outline of provision

Brighton and Hove has a commitment to delivering high quality co-ordinated services to children, young people and their families through innovative and creative service delivery.
Our experienced professionals provide support in two key areas:
Social, Emotional & Mental Health

  • Educational Psychology Service: Educational Psychologists
  • Schools' Wellbeing Service: Primary Mental Health Workers
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health Team: SEMH Specialist Practitioners

Learning and Communication

  • Autism & Language: SEN Specialist Teachers & Practitioners
  • Early Years: SEN Specialist Teachers & Practitioners
  • Educational Psychology Service: Educational Psychologists
  • Literacy Support Service: SEN Specialist Teachers
  • Sensory Needs - Hearing Impairment & Visual Impairment: SEN Specialist Teachers & Practitioners

Our practice involves using consultation, assessment, intervention, research and evaluation, training, and working systemically with schools and settings.
We have established a partial buy-back service with schools whilst maintaining a statutory and core service delivery across the city.

Who can purchase

Headteachers & SENCos from all schools: maintained, academy, independent schools, early years settings, Multi-academy Trusts  

What is the cost structure?

Charges are banded on the number of additional days purchased:

Educational Psychologist Daily Rate:

  • 1 to 4 days: £475 per day
  • 5 to 9 days: £450 per day
  • 10+ days: £400 per day

Primary Mental Health Worker  & Specialist Teacher Daily Rate:

  • 1 to 4 days: £350 per day
  • 5 to 9 days: £325 per day
  • 10+ days: £275 per day

Specialist Practitioner Daily Rate:

  • 1 to 4 days: £200 per day
  • 5 to 9 days: £180 per day
  • 10+ days: £160 per day

Early Years Transitional Support for Primary phase : £350

Literacy Support Service

The charging structure is based on packages of weekly support, which schools can choose.  There are morning, afternoon or day rates available, starting from £4059 for afternoon sessions.

Weekly support £6,088 morning
Weekly support £4,059 afternoon

Alternate weeks support £5,075 day
Alternate weeks support £3,045 morning
Alternate weeks support £2,030 afternoon
